Over a period of time the carpets and other flooring of a home or other place will become dirty despite vacuum cleaning them regularly. Conventional dry cleaning has some limitations as it cannot remove the stains caused by liquids like water, mud or other substances which seep into the carpet. Since conventional washing methods like a washing machine can damage the carpet, it is advisable to use steam cleaning to remove all the dirt from the carpet and make it look like new. A major advantage of using steam cleaning for carpet care is that it is a comparatively gentle method of cleaning the carpet, and is particularly suitable for carpets using delicate materials.
It is well known that water is the best way to clean a variety of surfaces, and items, as a larger number of substances either dissolve or are are dislodged by the liquid . Steam cleaning uses a stream of high pressure steam along with a solvent to remove all the dirt from the carpet, and make it look like new. Before steam cleaning the carpet, to increase the effectiveness of the process it is advisable to vacuum clean the carpet, to remove any dust, loose dirt, hair and other particles which are enmeshed in the carpet. If these particles are not removed first, steam cleaning will take more time as these particles will also be removed.
The kind of solvent to be used for steam cleaning depends on the material of the carpet, as some harsh solvents can damage the carpet. It is advisable to test the solvent on a small area of the carpet, initially, especially for expensive carpets. In case of stains or dirt patches, it is advisable to go over the dirty area repeatedly while steam cleaning , to ensure that the dirt and stains are completely removed as only a small amount of dirt may be removed during each cleaning. After steam cleaning, the carpet will become wet and care should be taken to ensure that no one stands or walks on the steam cleaned carpet, as it will become dirty again. The carpet should be dried for some time, and can then be used.
